The academic testing department offers a secure testing environment for proctored exams, CLEP, ACT, SAT and TExES/ExCET exams. Services are open to all students by appointment and HPU faculty members are also encouraged to request proctoring services.
Howard Payne University uses the Accuplacer® to ensure that advisors can appropriately place students in the proper courses in the key areas of mathematics, English and reading. With your academic success in mind, we use this placement tool to determine whether or not students are ready for college level math or English or to determine if students might need extra support in the area of reading, an integral component of virtually every college course. Students will be exempt from any Accuplacer test for which he/she will receive college credit.
Howard Payne will also provide the Accuplacer® assessment to students planning to attend other colleges or universities. These students will be charged a $15 proctoring fee.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
CLEP is a nationally recognized exam that college students can take to receive credit for some courses. All CLEP exams are now administered on the computer through the CLEP database.
More information on the CLEP exam is available here.
HPU Testing Services offers CLEP testing on the Brownwood campus, by appointment, to HPU students and students from the community who are attending other schools.
The CLEP exam fee is established by The College Board and is a minimum of $80. Registration and payment for the exam must be completed by the student online at The College Board website. Students who are not enrolled at HPU will pay an additional $15 proctoring fee to HPU on the day the exam is administered.
Please consult the HPU Catalog for more information about CLEP acceptance and other earned credit options. NOTE: Each college or university is given the freedom to decide which CLEP exams they will accept for credit and the minimum scores they will require for credit.
Proctored exams for online, correspondence or other distance education courses
Testing Services at HPU’s Brownwood campus will provide proctoring services to HPU students at no charge. Students from other institutions may be subject to a $15 fee per examination. Proctoring services need to be scheduled at least one week prior to the date requested and will be scheduled as available.
Advanced Placement (AP) credit
Although we do not administer the AP exam, we are responsible for the evaluation of AP scores and awarding credit as warranted. Please consult the HPU catalog which lists the AP exams and scores needed to receive credit at HPU.
Howard Payne University’s Brownwood campus serves as an official testing site for these and other standardized tests as a service to the HPU student body and the Brownwood community and surrounding areas. Students who need to sign up for these exams must register online. Howard Payne does not facilitate registration for these exams.
