HPU Heritage Singers to present concert

Heritage SingersBROWNWOOD – April 18, 2016 – The Howard Payne University Heritage Singers will present a spring concert titled “God So Loved the World,” Tuesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. This free concert is open to the public and will be held in the university’s Grace Chapel.

The program will include mainstream hits such as “My Funny Valentine,” “And So It Goes,” and “Unforgettable.” There will also be a medley of songs from HPU’s fall production of “Godspell,” and a challenging vocal setting of “Flight of the Bumblebee” that the singers have re-named “Flight of the Yellow Jacket.” The audience will also get to hear several songs that express the believer’s relationship to God and the call to share that love with others. One of the ensemble’s favorites is “Prayer of the Children,” a song written by Kurt Bestor to express the heartbreak of families torn apart in Yugoslavia during the country’s civil war. This song encompasses the title of the concert, “God So Loved the World.”

Heritage Singers is a select ensemble chosen from members of HPU’s Concert Choir. This group serves as ambassadors for the university, performing for churches and schools across the state, as well as alumni events and recruiting opportunities.

This semester, the ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Celeste Church, dean of institutional research and effectiveness and associate professor of music. Members of the ensemble include Brett Ellis, Timothy Emery, Josiah Horton, Isaac Howell, Marissa Godbey, Gabriella Guest, Victoria Malone, Brendyn Porter, Danielle Strickland, Elizabeth Wallace and Joshua Wood. They are accompanied by Joseph Dunlap, adjunct instructor of music.
