HPU hosts event for current students interested in Sumners Scholar Program

BROWNWOOD – February 6, 2024 – Howard Payne University recently held the Sumners Social, offering information to current HPU students interested in the Sumners Scholar Program. All current students eligible to apply for the scholarship program were invited. The event was hosted by current Sumners Scholars and Charles Lewis, HPU’s director of development and Sumners Scholarship coordinator, and was held in the Mabee University Center, where refreshments were served to attendees.

The Sumners Social began with a panel discussion from current HPU Sumners Scholars. Each of the scholars described their experiences going through the application and interview process and shared how the program has enriched their education. There was also an opportunity for attendees to ask questions of the panel. After this, the Sumner Scholars were available to visit with the prospective applicants.

Acceptance into the Sumners Scholar Program, created by the Sumners Foundation, is based on an assessment of academic excellence, a sense of civic responsibility, and leadership potential. Each year, five sophomore-level students are selected for the competitive four-semester program after an in-depth application and interview process by the trustees of the Sumners Foundation. Students of any major who are passionate about civic leadership are eligible for consideration. The Sumners Foundation provides a $7,500-per-semester scholarship for its participating students for tuition, fees, books or room and board, alongside unique opportunities to hear from congressional and civic leaders at various events and seminars.

Sumners Scholars are also provided with opportunities to attend annual leadership and policy analysis conferences to supplement their learning and expand their growth potential. While receiving the scholarship, students are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing with the university.

“It is a privilege to offer such a prestigious scholarship at HPU,” said Lewis. “I am eager to get more students involved in the application process. The Sumners Scholar Program is a one-of-a-kind experience for those interested in civic leadership.”
