HPU music department hosts occupational therapy workshop

BROWNWOOD – November 9, 2023 – Students and faculty in Howard Payne University’s Department of Music recently attended a workshop presented by Jocelyn Seamans, registered occupational therapist from Hendrick Outpatient Rehabilitation in Brownwood. The event was held at HPU’s Grace Chapel.

The presentation focused on preventing neuromusculoskeletal injuries associated with music learning and teaching. Participants learned practical techniques and strategies for healthy practice and performance habits. These techniques can help avoid or alleviate painful or debilitating injuries that can result from the repetitive stresses that musicians may experience.

“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to bring community resources to our campus that enhance the instructional programs within the university and support the student experience,” said Dr. Richard Fiese, dean of the School of Music and Fine Arts. “As graduates of the music program, our HPU students can bring these techniques to their future students so they too may experience healthy music-making.”
